California Lifeguard Tower in Faded Lumiere Blue

$125.00

California’s iconic lifeguard towers along the Pacific Coast have a fascinating history, and have been constructed and reconstructed over many years, some of them designed by noted architects, or so I’ve read.  This truly tiny painting was made during two visits to Silver Strand State Beach, and the stand is an ordinary “pastel blue” as described by the state of California, although my hunt for it’s true match produced a faded “lumiere blue” according to Maerz & Paul’s Dictionary of Color.  These structures provide protection, elevation and wide visibility for the lifeguards, and a visual anchor for swimmers and surfers to know where they are when in the ocean. I was looking north from my beach chair and it was like a little space landing vehicle in my imagination, a spider-like structure, not a treehouse, not a space vehicle, but invoking all of those, and a return to some lovely memories of teenage heaven on the distant shores of my Florida girlhood. What memories or moments does it provoke for you? I like that the painting doesn’t really capture the ocean but surely we all know it’s there.  That’s the icon talking.
