Florida might not own all the pinks and greens, nor the lush subtropical gardens it's climate supports, but it is a dream state for an impressionist painter just the same. Nearly obscured by flowering shrubs, this little caretaker's cottage, turned guest house, was part of an iconic Martin County Florida estate with a colorful history, the main building ( I was told) having been originally hand-built out of native cypress as a retreat for priests in the 1930's. Remembering it now, I can smell the salt air from the nearby ocean, and feel the heavy wet air surrounding each leaf and petal. Were they jacarandas or hibiscus?
